Smart Data Analytics

The Smart Data Analytics (SDA) research group, led by Prof. Dr. Jens Lehmann, has members from the Institute for Computer Science at the University of Bonn, the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and the Institute for Applied Computer Science Leipzig. At its core, the group investigates machine learning techniques ("analytics") using structured knowledge ("smart data"). The group aims at covering the full spectrum of research including theoretical foundations, algorithms, prototypes and industrial applications.

Distributed Semantic Analytics

The research group develops scalable analytics algorithms based on Apache Spark and Apache Flink for analysing large scale datasets by distributing the computational tasks in memory.

Semantic Question Answering

The use of Semantic Web technologies led to an increasing number of structured data published on the Web. Despite the advances on question answering systems retrieving the desired information from structured sources is still a substantial challenge.

Structured Machine Learning

The group focuses on combining Semantic Web and supervised Machine Learning technologies. The goal is to improve both quality and quantity of available knowledge by extracting, analysing, enriching and linking existing data.

Deep Learning

Deep learning models consist of multiple non-linear processing layers which allow for the hierarchical extraction of more and more abstract characteristics of the data and the discovery of the intricate structure in large data sets by building distributed representations.

Software Engineering for Data Science

The group researches on how data and software engineering methods can be aligned and how those two closely related areas can benefit from each other.

Semantic Data Management

The group's research focus is on knowledge and data representation, integration, and management based on semantic technologies.

Knowledge Extraction and Validation

The group is addressing problems for knowledge extraction, representation, storage, and management that the information era has brought in various segments of today's life.
